NFL Week 8 Picks

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Tennessee Titans (1.00pm Sunday, October 27)

Both these teams have losing records but Tampa have faced a tougher schedule than Tennessee. Five of the Buccs’s six opponents so far have a winning record, while the Titans have played some of the worst teams in the league.

The Buccs managed to beat the Rams and Panthers during their tough early season. They have the Seahawks and Saints to come in the next month so they will be looking to take a win wherever they can.

The Titans defense has been strong all season but the weakness of the O has destabilised the team. Their Week 6 duck egg in Denver got Marcus Mariota benched. They won in Week 7 but they didn’t look good and were really just the least bad team against the Chargers.

The feature will be the clash between Tampa’s top five offense and Tennessee’s top five D. But the Titans don’t look ready to beat a good team right now. We fancy Tampa for the win and we’re getting points in the spread.

Verdict: Buccaneers +2.5

Denver Broncos @ Indianapolis Colts (1.00pm Sunday, October 27)

Indianapolis face a spread of -5 against the Broncos. That is low considering the Colts beat the Texans and Chiefs by a greater margin in their last two games.

Denver are a far worse team than the Texans and Chiefs. The Broncos started their year 0-4 before wins against the woeful Chargers and the Titans, who subsequently dropped their starting quarterback.

The Colts also had a slow (2-2) start to the season but they started even slower last year before winning nine of their last ten games. The standard they showed in their last two win makes them divisional favorites and playoff contenders.

On paper this is a 2-5 team versus a 4-2 team but in reality they are poles apart. The Broncos offense is ineffective and the smart Colts offense should put up points. We’re taking the Colts.

Verdict: Colts -5

Carolina Panthers @ San Francisco 49ers (4.05pm Sunday, October 27)

Two good teams on winning streaks. The 49ers are 6-0 on the season but they haven’t put up a lot of points recently, winning 20-13 over the Rams and 9-0 against the Redskins.

The monsoon conditions in Washington were a problem last week but the injury to FB Kyle Juszczyk hasn’t helped their scheme in the last couple of weeks. Another running back, two tight ends and three receivers were limited in practice this week so San Fran aren’t at full offensive capacity.

The Panthers, meanwhile, arrive off a bye week. They have won their last four games, putting up good margins against good teams including the Texans, Jaguars and Buccaneers.

Carolina are getting points in the spread but they may be the most underrated team in the league right now at 40-1 for the Super Bowl. They have a strong D, an unstoppable weapon in Christian McCaffrey and they are capable of beating the 49ers.

Verdict: Panthers +5
