NFL Week 9 Picks
Houston Texans @ Jacksonville Jaguars (9.30am, Sunday November 3rd)
Two familiar rivals in unfamiliar surroundings here as the AFC South teams travel to Wembley Stadium, London. This is the seventh year in a row the Jaguars have played in London; they are 3-3 at Wembley.
This is the first time Houston have played in London, but they do hold an edge over Jacksonville on recent form. The Texans won both divisional matches last year and they beat the Jaguars 13-12 back in Week 2.
Those last three meetings between the teams yielded 27, 23 and 25 points. With the line at 46.5 this looks one to go under.
The Texans have played some high scoring games recently but they have scored more than 31 points just once this year (against the atrocious Falcons D) and they are in unfamiliar surroundings here.
Five of Jacksonville’s eight games this year have gone under 46.5. Chuck in some wet English weather and we should be set for a low total.
Verdict: Texans/Jaguars under 47
Washington Redskins @ Buffalo Bills (1pm, Sunday November 3rd)
These two teams often produce low scoring games. Buffalo are averaging 36.5 points per game and Washington are at 36.8. With the line at 37, we’re looking at the under.
Bills games come out low because of their tight defense. They let up 31 points against the Eagles last week but their previous high for the season was 21. This should be a return to their sub-20 normal against the low-scoring Redskins.
Ignoring their game against the Dolphins – who were trying to lose and still almost won – the Redskins have scored 3, 7, 0 and 9 points in recent games. The Bills D should be able to subdue them again.
If Buffalo can keep the Skins to seven points, you’re betting on the Bills scoring less than 30. Than happened in six of their last seven games – the exception being the 31 points they put up against the tanking Dolphins.
Verdict: Redskins/Bills under 37
Cleveland Browns @ Denver Broncos (4.25pm, Sunday November 3rd)
The Browns have had a mixed year. At their best the beat the Ravens 40-25, at their worst they were flattened by the 49ers 31-3.
They need to get on top of discipline, unforced errors and penalties. If they do they will be competitive and they have a much higher ceiling than the Denver Broncos.
The one thing that will help for the rest of the season is their strength of schedule. They have played the best offenses in the league in the last five weeks (Rams, Patriots, 49ers, Seahawks, Ravens). The Broncos will be a huge step down.
Denver have averaged just 15.6 points per game on offense this year. Their quarterback Joe Flacco is out this week and back up Brandon Allen gets his first NFL start, age 27.
The Denver D can play but this is an opportunity for the Browns to get their stuff together after a string of tough games.
Verdict: Browns -3
